I am now 100% engaged!

I graduated from being 80% engaged. I went to the jeweller and picked up my engagement ring.  It is beautiful. My poor fiance will now have to survive on smørrebrød for a year. I wont be posting pictures of the ring because Andy’s mum will think he spent too much. My mum will say he spent too less.

We got 100% engaged in style. We made a Skype date. I cooked my favorite chicken in Bamboo-shoot with rice. I even wore lipstick and perfume.

Well, it was a key ring. But good enough substitute.

He took the ring from me and slid it down my finger. O.K! It was a key ring, but you get the idea.

A toast is in order, but no champagne in sight. He makes do with milk and I, with some wine.

And just like that, we were 100% engaged. Well, what can I say, we make do with what we’ve got.  Substitution is what you learn best to survive in a long distance relationship for 4.5 years.

Jeg elsker dig min numsefisk. Du er mit hele verden.

Question: do you wear the engagement ring on the left or right hand?

I ask because we had this amazingly odd time of it, my now-husband and I. Apparently, in Denmark you wear the engagement ring on your left hand and your wedding ring on your right, which is completely backwards from how we do it in the US. Since we be po’, my husband bought the wedding bands and we used those as our engagement rings. (Which I am profoundly grateful for, because I wave my hands around a lot and catch myself on myself, so having a ring with any projection would snag on myself or others. Really, I once cut my face with my claddagh ring [the crown].) So people were really confused because I was wearing a wedding band on my left hand and telling people I was engaged.

To add to the confusion, because of all the Americaness (or maybe just other foreignness creeping in), many Danes now wear their rings reversed, in the US style.

Anyone else who’s married to a foreigner is more than welcome to tell me how they wear their ring, I’m curious.

Archaeogoddess: Well, In India we wear them on the left. Many wear their engagement rock along with their wedding band on same finger.

Some folks buy them rocks for both engagement and wedding rings. I have no idea how they wear them. Me also being poor etc.

I will probably wear only my plain wedding band in DK and engagement ring when in India. My engagement ring is a lil flashy for Denmark and too small & simple for my country of bling.

…and to anyone who saw this post little earlier and is now thinking – where did all the pictures go?
    - It’s me the vain man from the country that so proudly brags of freedom of speech, who asked my dear 100% fiancé to take down some of the pics. Partly cuz I look funny and partly cuz of some wierd feeling that you people who read this shouldn’t see everything.
Jeg elsker dig – og det må hele verden gerne vide.

    Nooo, don’t do it!

Hi there, Thanks for your comment. Its great to keep meeting new people! Where in Aarhus are you planning to move to? And I loved your blog post on the Asian woman/ white guy union- the sacrifices we make in terms of diversity of food, lifestyle and luxuries for these men! And the terrible stereotype that we are in it for a “better life”. What irony!

Best of luck with your move to Denmark. Am sure it’ll work out great. Scandanavia generally is a wonderful place to breed ‘em and weep!!:-)

Come over and visit me in Stavanger if the Danes get to you!
